You have a cracked molar. You need a crown. In a traditional dental office, that means two appointments spread across two or three weeks — impressions made with goopy trays, a plastic temporary cemented onto your tooth, and a return visit to swap it out for the permanent restoration once the outside lab ships it back. For busy Miami professionals, that timeline is more than inconvenient. It's unnecessary.
CEREC same-day restorations have fundamentally changed how crowns, inlays, onlays, and even some veneers are delivered. At Sharp Dentistry & Associates in Coconut Grove, we use this CAD/CAM technology daily, designing and milling precision ceramic restorations while you're still in the chair. One appointment. No temporary. No second round of numbing.
But speed alone doesn't make a restoration worth choosing. What matters is whether a same-day crown matches — or exceeds — the durability, fit, and aesthetics of its traditional counterpart. The clinical evidence, our in-house lab capabilities, and over 25 years of restorative experience say it does.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The system combines three stages — digital scanning, computer-aided design, and in-office milling — into a single workflow that replaces conventional impressions and outside lab fabrication.
Instead of biting into a tray of polyvinyl siloxane or alginate, your tooth is captured with a high-resolution intraoral scanner. The result is a precise 3D digital model of the prepared tooth and surrounding bite. This scan is faster, more comfortable, and eliminates the dimensional distortion that can occur when traditional impression material shrinks or warps.
Using specialized software, Dr. Bruno Sharp or one of our prosthodontists designs the restoration on screen — shaping the anatomy, adjusting contact points, refining the occlusion. Because the design happens chairside, the doctor can factor in nuances of your bite and esthetics in real time rather than writing notes for a technician who has never examined you.
The approved design is sent to our in-office milling unit, which carves the restoration from a block of high-strength dental ceramic in roughly 10 to 20 minutes. After milling, the crown is stained, glazed, and polished — then bonded to your tooth the same day.
Skipping the second appointment is appealing, but it's not the most important advantage. The real clinical benefits run deeper.
Temporary crowns are sealed with weak cement by design — they need to come off easily at the next visit. That weak seal is also a liability. Food, saliva, and bacteria can seep underneath, sometimes leading to sensitivity or secondary decay on the prepared tooth. Eliminating the temporary eliminates that vulnerability.
CEREC's 3D cone-beam imaging and digital scanning produce margin accuracy measured in microns. A 2023 Dentsply Sirona survey found that over 91 percent of patients who experienced same-day crowns preferred them over traditional crowns, citing comfort, fit, and aesthetic quality as primary reasons. That preference tracks with what we see in our Coconut Grove office every week.
Clinical studies consistently show that CEREC crowns achieve success rates exceeding 94 to 97 percent over ten years — comparable to, and in some analyses exceeding, traditional lab-fabricated crowns. More than 80,000 dentists worldwide have adopted the CEREC platform, with approximately 15,000 in the United States alone.
A common criticism of same-day crowns — noted in a late-2025 analysis by the Los Angeles Times — is whether chairside-milled restorations can match the artistry of restorations crafted by a master ceramist. It's a fair question, and our answer is: they don't have to compete when both resources exist under the same roof.
Sharp Dentistry operates a full in-house dental lab on-site at our Brickell-adjacent Coconut Grove office. This means:
This dual capability is unusual. Most practices that offer CEREC don't have an on-site lab. Most practices with an on-site lab don't invest in CEREC. Having both means Dr. Sharp can choose the best workflow for each individual case — and adjust on the spot if something needs refinement.
CEREC is remarkably versatile, but not every situation calls for a same-day approach. Here's where it excels and where our team may recommend an alternative path.
During your consultation, our prosthodontic team evaluates tooth structure, esthetic demands, and your personal timeline to recommend the right approach. South Florida patients seeking both quality and efficiency rarely have to compromise when both options live in one office.
Many patients in Coral Gables and greater Miami ask whether a same-day crown costs more than a traditional one. In most cases, the fee is comparable — and when you factor in the eliminated second appointment (including time away from work, additional copay, and parking), same-day restorations often represent a net savings.
For patients without dental insurance, our Sharp Smile Club membership provides affordable preventive care and discounted restorative fees, making CEREC crowns accessible without navigating insurance networks. We also offer no-interest financing options so that the cost of a necessary restoration never delays treatment.
CEREC is a tool. The outcome depends on who is operating it. At Sharp Dentistry & Associates, same-day restorations are planned and placed by prosthodontists — specialists whose advanced training focuses exclusively on the design, fit, and esthetics of dental restorations. Dr. Bruno Sharp, a fourth-generation dentist with over 25 years of experience serving Miami, personally oversees complex restorative cases.
Our specialist team — prosthodontists, a board-certified periodontist, an endodontist, and an oral surgeon — practices under one roof on South Bayshore Drive. If your cracked tooth also needs a root canal before it's crowned, or if a failing tooth requires extraction and an implant-supported crown, every step happens in a single coordinated office. No referrals. No waiting for records to transfer.
Combine that with an in-house dental lab, CEREC CAD/CAM milling, 3D cone-beam imaging, and a 5-star reputation built over two and a half decades, and you have a practice designed to deliver restorations that fit your life and your smile.

Most patients are in and out within 60 to 90 minutes. That includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, on-screen design, milling, and final bonding. More complex cases may take slightly longer, but the entire process is completed in one sitting.
Clinical research shows CEREC crowns achieve success rates of 94 to 97 percent over a decade, which is on par with — and in some studies slightly better than — traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal or all-ceramic lab crowns. The high-strength ceramic blocks used in modern CEREC systems are designed for long-term durability.
Yes, in most cases. CEREC restorations are milled from tooth-colored ceramic and can be shade-matched to your surrounding teeth. For highly visible front teeth requiring advanced characterization, our in-house lab technicians can add custom staining and glaze layers to achieve a lifelike result.
Most dental insurance plans cover CEREC crowns at the same rate as traditional crowns because the restoration type — an all-ceramic crown — is the same. We recommend contacting your insurance provider or asking our front-office team to verify your specific benefits before your appointment.
Sharp Dentistry offers the Sharp Smile Club, a membership program that provides preventive care and discounted pricing on restorative treatments including crowns. We also provide no-interest financing so you can move forward with treatment on a timeline that works for your budget.
